Life in the Ashram, Six: Food, Glorious Food!

Slices of unripe, green mango with chili sprinkled on top...considered a delicacy by some, or just an excuse to eat a mango when too impatient to wait for it to ripen! another month, presumably, should do the trick...I await this moment with baited breath!

Dear readers, my relationship with technology is akin to a never ending field of battle. I am horrifically dismayed to report that, after spending an entire hour composing and editing the original posting--about three times longer than this version-- with the touch of a mere back button, I managed to delete the entire thing, photos and all. Nothing left, just a blank document. I was utterly disgusted, and thought about not writing about food after all...but then I was inspired to composed this silly ditty in my remaining 10 minutes of internet access here! So forgive me, friends... and at least you get the essence.

When I have another hour in another week from now of internet usage, I will attempt to elaborate further! Meanwhile, word of caution: if composing a blog posting, never, EVER, for any reason, hit the "back" button!!!! or do so at your own peril....

So here you go, sung to the tune of the song by the same name, from that old classic production, "Oliver":

Food, Glorious Food
Hot spices to muster...
When we're in the mood,
Green mango and chili to pucker!

Just picture this cashew fruit,
Chilled, juicy and sweet!
Don't swallow the fibers, though...
Spit out like this, nice and neat!

Food, glorious food...
I'm anxious to try it
Rice, badjis and dahl...
My favorite diet!

When it is a holiday,
There will be pudding with saffron
You've never tasted anything like it, boy!
Eat up with some chai tea to spike it!

Food, glorious food
Mango and peanut chutney
Okra, slimy and stewed,
Upma, steamy and nutty

Just picture a Barfi Bite,
Sugar and ghee, it eschews...
Oh, food, Indian food, glorious food,
won...der...ful......food!!!!

  1. Good song!! The food looks great!
I've been eating lots of greens and beans. Unfortunately, eating too much sugar!
Trying to do some fasting...but no will power!
Take care and count your blessings! That's what I do every day!!
    Hugs and Blessings! Joyce

  2. Sorry you lost some of your writing- I hate it when that happens! Still a great post and I had to search for the Oliver Twist song as I forgot. I recently ordered a mango at a cafe called Mangoes-a-go-go and they also served it with a red spicy sauce. Different for sure.
Thanks for sharing the cultural cuisine!
